The Little Jewish Prince Empty The Little Jewish Prince

Post by House of Judah Wed Jan 13, 2016 6:04 am

House of Judah wrote:Those who stood upon the docks of Tyrn could see the carrack slowly approaching the port.  The golden Lion of Judah wreathed in olive branches painted on the sail declared its origin in one of the Judean ports.  The presence of ship from Judea was not an abnormal occurrence, after all much trade with the east flowed through Judean lands before making its way to the realms of Europe.  But this was no trade vessel.  True, the captain of the ship had taken on some cargo to help offset the cost of the voyage, but it’s true purpose lay in the small child and the man beside who both stood upon the deck, watching Tyrn grow closer with each passing minute.

The boy was Shmuel ben Yitzchak ben Yehudah, Prince of Judeans.  A single season remained until his sixth birthday.  He still did not understand why he could not remain in Jerusalem with his family.  “Politics,” Rav Immanuel had told him.  “If ever in your life you wish to know the reason you must do a thing, it is politics.”  It made no sense to the boy, but a five year old would know little about such matters anyways.  Still, Shmuel could feel the trepidation in the air, understood in some small way that his father had potentially cast him into peril.

Rav Immanuel looked down at the boy with sympathy.  There was no doubt that Yitzchak had sent his son into potential danger.  Immanuel had known the now King of Judeans for many years and knew he did not do so lightly, nor for purposes of his own power.  By sending his son to a foreign court, the King had secured an oath from Pope Leo VII, the head of the Christian faith, that his realm and his people would not come under threat by Christian lords.  That oath could defend his subjects for generations to come, a worthy gain by Immanuel’s estimation.  He had seen his own share of war and come to know that no matter the victor, the common man would always lose out in any conflict.  The captain turned rabbi would rather live with men than kill them.  He shifted his arm and felt it rub against the hilt of his sword.  Then again, he would kill them if need be.  The boy would be a hostage, but a well protected one.

“Remember, boy,” Immanuel said.  “You are a son kings.”  Shmuel nodded despite not understanding the meaning of his tutor’s words.  The two watched as the ship finally kissed the pier.  Crewmen jumped off the rails with rope and began tying it in place as others began lowering the gangplank.  Immanuel waited patiently for the plank to be secured before motioning for Shmuel to follow him and striding off the ship.  Shmuel followed closely behind as the two disembarked and approached the greeting party.
Cybelos wrote:City guards on the docks was never an unusual sight in Tyrn, but this certainly was. At least a dozen guardsmen who must have been wearing 50 pounds of armor each surrounding two, less armored, well dressed men. The first being the Duke of Tyrna, Issac of Carmanos , wearing purple underclothes beneath his ceremonial armor. The other man, a paragon of modesty, was the City Governor of Tyrn, Stylian of Tyrn, dressed in all white, sendal robes with a flowing, orange cape that somehow stayed clean whilst ever so slightly dragging upon the docks behind him.

The scouting vessel had pulled into port not a few minutes ago, telling of the incoming ship they were waiting for.  The Judean ship soom became visible in the slight murk of the early hour.

It wasn't long before the young prince, a handsome lad, Shmuel ben Yitzchak ben Yehudah (those poor Judean clerks) and his accompanying rabbi, Rav Immanuel had docked.
The boy was frightened... shocked... disappointed? If so, not in the city, one would hope. Besides, being hard to read will serve him well in the future.

The Duke, Rabbi, and Governor exchanged pleasantries, and the two Cybelosians introduced themselves to the young prince.

About as warm and comfortable as one could expect whilst surrounded by a dozen well armed guardsmen. The Prince wasn't in that much danger, surely. Though, I do suppose any incidents would cause only trouble for our fair Kingdom.

These dozen, faceless guardsmen surrounded the four on all sides on their walk to the court of King Alexander who was, himself, en route to the capital by way of Port Attis in newly conquered Aegyptus.

The Governor showed the prince, Shmuel, to his quarters in the court. Silken sheets and pillows, priceless works of art, and a view of the sea. Of course, the fineries were not going to matter much to a servant of God, who was assured that one guard would be posted outside his prince's door at all times, who would also accompany him whilst wandering the court, and that, three guards would be accompanying him if he wished to see the city proper.

I do hope silk and swords feel like home enough, I know this must be trying.

Daily observations

Stavros the Marcher
Library of Tyrn
Immanuel ben Elior, rabbi and royal tutor of Prince Shmuel, had accepted Duke Isaac’s hospitality on behalf of the young prince.  He had been able to detect no ill thoughts on the part of the Duke or his men, nor from Stylian, the City Governor.  Still, King Yitzchak was well aware that there were Christians who had opposed the Pope’s decision to enter into an agreement with the Hebrew monarch.  Rav Immanuel could see where King feared that those same men would try to strike at him through his son.

Immanuel had wasted no time in securing lodging for the nurse who had accompanied them and set her up for use of servant kitchen to prepare Shmuel’s meals.  The need for meals prepared in accordance with the laws of kashrut provided Immanuel with the perfect reason to closely control anything and everything the prince consumes, precluding the possibility of poison.  He began reaching out to the servants as well, subtly gaining sources of information.  He paid one of the young maids to assist the nurse in preparing meals, a task which would allow him regular opportunities to probe her for further knowledge of Tyrn.

That first night, Shmuel and Immanuel supped with the Duke.  Their meals had been prepared by the prince’s nurse.  It was similar fair to what the Duke dined upon, though lamb had been substituted for the boar that the Duke ate.

“Your Grace,” said Immanuel, “please allow me to once again thank you for your hospitality, and your assistance in ensuring that the prince and myself can meet our obligations.  I was wondering if I could impose upon you for some more knowledge of yourself and of our illustrious host, who I am told is setting sail from Alexandria any day now.  It has been some years since His Majesty made his pilgrimage to the Holy Land, and while I got some sense of his character at that time, the years can change a man, as can miles from home.”

The boar had been brought out first, the young prince was not ecstatic, he noted. He would have to get him some sweets from that confectioner's shop down by the westernmost docks, if the ever-attentive rabbi would allow it, he mused before his thoughts were interrupted.

You wish to know about me? An honor, Sir Immanuel, well, let us see, I won't bore you with too many tedious details, but let's begin right before the unification of the realm, shall we?

I held the city of Carmanos, just in the north. Lovely place, though, perhaps I am a bit biased.  It would be an honor to have you visit me at my estate there.
I was one of the initial supporters of unification. We needed it, we couldn't grow our inland cities without it, and Lord Caernwell commanded a respect that his family name entails, he doesn't care for the name, himself. Wants to make an impact without relying on his ancestors, I believe, although he must admit, that name did garner the initial respect he needed for the support of the Lords and Ladies of the realm.

I would expect that King Alexander may still be the man you remember, with the maturity of those years since you had last met would entail, of course.
Always curious, that one, about the world, a fascination with the empires of old, and the gods of the ancient world.

I hope you know how much he enjoyed his pilgrimages to the holy land.
He still collects the writings of Judea, in fact we've an impressive selection of Judean titles in the Great Library, here in the capital.
He has written his own observations of everywhere he has travelled. The land, the people, how they live, religious impact in the area.
You must ask him for his writings of his travels to Judea.

But, I must say, I hope you're not asking me of his character in doubt.
His Grace has opened his capital to you and granted you safe harbor. Could this behavior be expected of the other Lords of Europe?

If you do have your doubts you can of course request an audience with the King when he arrives back in the city. He is due back in three days time.
Anyway,do enjoy the boar, hunted this morning in preparation of your arrival. Though, I'm certain our chefs would have been capable of preparing the meal to your liking.
I would of course be willing to have specialty goods imported if what we have is not to your liking.

“I’m afraid we will not be able to partake of the boar,” replied Immanuel. “Please, Your Grace, do not concern yourself overly with the meal. The dietary restrictions of our faith demand quite a bit. There are many foods that are forbidden to Hebrews, and the servants kitchen we have been allowed to avail ourselves of needed to be thoroughly cleansed before it could be used to prepare our food. Besides, Talya has helped care for the Prince since his birth. I wouldn’t dream of denying her the charge now.

“I am pleased to hear that His Majesty is still much the same man that I met when he made his pilgrimage years ago. I remember he and my king, Yitzchak, would spend hours debating philosophy in the evenings. Plato, Aristotle, Hillel, even Yeshuah. His Majesty may favor the Kohanim, but for my shekels I think he would make a better rabbi than priest any day.” Immanuel looked over at Shmuel, who was quietly eating his food. The rabbi sighed and leaned into the duke.

“Your Grace, are there any other children at court? I fear Shmuel might lose out in some of his socialization if he does not spend time with others his own age. He would do well with some playmates. Ones of… proper breeding who wouldn’t seek to take him into any actual danger.”

Ah, of course, do forgive me, I've never hosted any of your fellow countrymen before.

As for the children, plenty of our statesmen have sons. I would be honored to make the introduction.

We could also see to it that young Shmuel begins his schooling immediately. That was to be tended to by the tutors of the court in private sessions.
Ah, specialised tutors that is to say, I've no doubt in your abilities. the Duke sipped his wine, trying to ease himself

Still, I'm sure we could have it that Shmuel is entered into a more public teaching environment, if you wish.
I wouldn't want it being said that the prince wasn't allowed the finest experiences that Tyrna can offer.

Or, I've an idea, if you prefer. We could enroll the lad in our swordsmanship program. Plenty of noble sons and some daughters are already enrolled.

In fact, they're to begin a new lesson on the ways of the master swordsmen of Egypt soon.
Though, exciting as that is, mayhap that is a bit advanced. Though, they do have a class of the basics with children of his age.

All lessons are taught with wood or blunted steel, naturally. No actual danger, as you say. Also, you are welcome to observe.
No finer friends have I made than those I've fought besides! the Duke calms himself of his fervor  *Ahem.. Nevertheless, Stin iyá mas!

“Swordsmanship,” thought Immanuel out loud.  “A fine skill for a royal prince to learn.  And I will avail myself of your offer to observe the tutelage.  May even step in for a bit.  I have myself learned of the swordsmen of Mitzrayim*, as well as Bavel†, the heart of Eiropah‡ and even the distant orient, though the first is the only one that I learned outside a training salle.”  Immanuel took a sip of his wine.

“Mmm.  I must compliment you on your wine cellar.  It is exquisite.  Anyways, it does surprise me that you have young women training in the use of arms.  Not that I find it objectionable, in fact I find the idea quite logical.  Women can often be worse victims of war than their husbands or sons.  Still, it seems a bit… unorthodox.  I shudder to think of how they might react to such a notion in more conservative realms.  Imagine a Beziquan girl demanding to be taught to carry a sword.  I think the nearest priest may suffer an apoplexy.”  Immanuel chuckled lightly.

By all means, I hope you do step in. I'm sure the children would delight in seeing what an accomplished swordsman can do, and I'm certain, the teachers would welcome the slight break you'd afford them.

Oh, and believe me,I'm sure you could find plenty here who object to the thought of women training with a sword, most of those opposed, however, are men. Take that as you will.

Truly said, most of the women who train in the art of swordsmanship are of noble birth. However, there is no law preventing women from serving in the army, or as a soldier on a ship.

That would be due to the uniting of the Isles. In Crete, for example, it would be a normal occurrence to see a woman captaining a ship.

In Caer Daeda, I know that the guard captain is a woman. It's not theirs or ours being progressive or radical, it has just been commonplace on the Isles for many years. That's the Isles, though, and they're an entirely different story altogether. Yet, I wouldn't be opposed to some of their views reaching the mainland.

I do hope the capital has been welcoming to the both of you. I understand how strange this must seem, my lord.
I hope you know that we will be doing everything that we can to make this as comfortable as we can.

I promise you'll be meeting more interesting people than I, and for that, I'm sure you must be a bit pleased, eh?

“That is a very cosmopolitan viewpoint,” responded Immanuel. “I think it will be good for the boy, though I’m sure his grandfather won’t approve. But if I ever cared what he thought, I think it was a few inches of my hairline ago. Perhaps I will write my King and suggest to him that he might consider giving Princess Yael lessons. That is if she hasn’t found them for herself yet.” He looked over at Shmuel, who was idly playing with the last remnants of his plate and yawning.

“Your Grace, If I may beg your leave, it has been a long day and I really should put the Prince to bed. I would have him rested for tomorrow so that we can meet with the tutors of King Alexander’s court and assess how they can assist his development.” With that, he rose and bowed deeply to the Duke. Prince Shmuel saw his action and immediately rose to ape the rabbi, but was stopped at a light bob of the upper body by his teacher. “Good evening, Your Grace.”

“So, Your Highness,” began Immanuel when they were in the prince’s quarters, “how do you think of His Grace?”

“His Grace?”

“Duke Isaac.  It is the common practice to call a duke ‘His Grace,’ much as you as a prince are called ‘Your Highness.’”

“Oh.  He’s nice.”

“Is that all?  That he’s nice?”  Shmuel shrugged his shoulders.

“I suppose that is the most I can ask for from you at this point in life. At some point, however, you will have to learn that while there are those who are nice, there will be many who will only pretend to be nice.”

“Why would they pretend to be nice?”

“They may want something from you.  Or they may want to hurt you.”

“Why?”

“If ever in your life, you wish to know the reason…”

“P…politics?”

“Indeed.  I guess we will see.  Now, to bed, my prince.  We must be rested when we meet King Alexander’s tutors.”

The Duke and his guards rode from the capital to his castle just outside of the city.
The Duke should be relatively at peace, he thought, the conflict in Rhodes was coming to a close, and the African settlements would be a great producer of grain and wealth come summer.
But, the Duke's mind was elsewhere, he couldn't shake a sinking feeling. He was sure the majority of people in the kingdom, in Tyrna at least he was certain, were okay with having Jews in the capital as guests of the King, as there was a considerable Jewish population in the Kingdom already.

That doesn't mean others from realms outside the Kingdom would approve, however.
The Duke steeled himself, any problems any other realm had with the arrangement, could be solved diplomatically, surely.

Speaking of diplomacy, perhaps he could secure more favorable trading opportunities between Tyrna and Judea if he was tactful, he mused.

The Little Jewish Prince Empty Re: The Little Jewish Prince

Post by House of Judah Mon Jan 25, 2016 1:36 am

It was not long after first light that Rav Immanuel ben Elior began his morning prayers.  He could not do the full Shacharit without the accompaniment of a minyan.  Still, he was a pious man and what he could do on his own he did.  He made a note to himself to make acquaintances among the Jews of Tyrn so that he might, at least occasionally, be able to say Kadish and recite the Amidah.

When he had completed his morning obligations, Immanuel removed the simple silks that he slept in and began donning his normal attire.  His cotton undergarments were covered first by his armors, leather pants with demi-grieves over his shins and a shirt of mail covered by a leather jacket.  Over that was placed a silk shirt, pants and robes, concealing the armour that lay beneath.  A leather belt went on over the robes, and the rabbi hung his sword from the left side.  Next came a silk sash tied over the belt.  Finally, he wrapped his turban onto his head and slid his slippers onto his feet.  He briefly stretched his limbs, ensuring he had full range of motion, then centered himself.

He exited his room and immediately made his way to Prince Shmuel’s apartments.  He nodded to the guard outside and passed within.  The rooms were still dark, and Immanuel could see the boy sleeping peacefully.  He walked to the window and opened the curtains, letting the sun’s light fall on the boy’s face.  Slowly, Shmuel began to stir.  His eyes blinked open and he beheld his teacher.

“Good morning, Your Highness.”

“Good morning, Ravi1.”

“Come.  It is time for breakfast.  And after that, we shall meet with King Alexander’s tutors and see what they can teach you.”  Shmuel was obviously more excited about the prospect of breakfast than meeting with tutors.  He quickly dressed and went with Immanuel to the servant’s kitchen where the prince’s nurse, Talya, had prepared their breakfast.  They ate their fill, then made their way to their hosts library to meet one of the scholars of Alexander’s court who was being considered.

Knight-Taxiarch Cisseus stood in the main hall of the library, as per his instructions. He wore his full suit of armor, minus the helmet; Not your average sight in a place such as this.
You would be able to tell how meticulously maintained this armor was from a glance You might even be able to read your book in the reflection, and you would guess his helmet was probably sat upon a mannequin's head somewhere safe, in a place of pride. Just as shiny as the suit to which it belongs.

Cisseus wore a vert sash around his chest, tailored perfectly, you wouldn't be able to fit two fingers in the space between the sash and the armor. He wore his dark brown hair short and clean, and he wore his trimmed short beard in a way that could be described as stately.

He moved his eyes from the statues that adorned the hall towards the multiple pair of footfalls approaching him. Three guardsmen, a man donned in simple but elegant enough plainclothes, and a young man in light regalia.  "Well, this must be them." He thought.

Greetings, Your Highness, Prince Shmuel ben Yitzchak ben Yehudah, of Judea
Cisseus made a fist with his right hand, brought it over his heart, and bowed deeply, his left arm falling to his back.

And he said as he turned to the rabbi you must be Rav Immanuel ben Elior, I presume?
He gave the man a short bow.  "Welcome, both of you to the capital."

He turned towards the three accompanying guards giving them a slight nod, which they returned.
He begins speaking to them briefly in a language that the guests may not understand.
You would be able to identity this language by its emphasis on syllables, it's easy to note. But the tone of the soldiers is warm and friendly.

"Forgive me, Your Highness, Rabbi, if you'll follow me, I am to show you to some of the tutors of the court."

Cisseus turns on his heel and begins walking into the library proper.

"We have three tutors for your perusal today, Your Highness, the first being Lazarus the Elder, just this way."

Lazarus has never been one for first impressions, pacing back and forth whilst mumbling to himself occasionally jotting down a note.
Ahem said Cisseus, grabbing the old man's attention. "Hmm... yes, what is it?" Lazarus spoke, half paying attention, still pacing.

"Lord Lazarus, if I may introduce Lazarus looked up,and in seeing the guards he fixed the horseshoe of hair on his head Shmuel ben Yitzchak ben Yehudah, Prince of the Judeans,
and his accompanying rabbi, Immanuel ben Elior."

"Your Highness, this is Lazarus the Elder of Sparti, Researcher and Tutor at the Royal Library."

"Ah, Your Highness, forgive my manners. I am Lazarus the Elder, not the most flattering name, at least they don't call me Lazarus the Bald" He says giving a weak smile, and making final adjustments to what little hair he has.

"I am to be your linguistics tutor during your stay here. I will be teaching you the basics of reading, writing, and speaking in the three languages you will be needing during your stay with us.
The three languages being English, Greek, and Latin." Lazarus looks to the rabbi "And, perhaps Hebrew? Not my specialty, but I am willing."

The four of the group speak a while longer, eventually giving their farewells.

"Right. Onto the next tutor, right this way." Spoke Cisseus

The six made their way down a lonely, lightly used corridor when they begin to hear music in the air, what sounds like two lutes playing simultaneously; a dulcimer to a trained ear.

The Knight knocks on the door, this would be the next tutor's room, it would seem. A response grants the group entrance into the room.

"Your Highness, I would like to introduce your next tutor, Lady Eleni of Taygetos
as talented as she is lovely."

Lady Eleni layed down her hammers and bowed her head slowly.

"Prince Shmuel ben Yitzchak ben Yehudah?" She spoke with a thick, melodic accent. "An honor, Your Highness"
"Greetings, you must be Immanuel ben Elior, no? I do hope I am pronouncing your names correctly!"
"I am Lady Eleni, Tutor of Manners and Morality here in court. I am also a teacher of Dancing, singing and playing music."
"You may both call me Eleni, no need for formalities yet! She beamed.

After pleasantries and letting the Prince try out some of the exotic instruments they parted ways.

Knight-Taxiarch Cisseus leads the group back to the main hall and in front of the statue he was looking at before the Judeans arrived.
"Cybele, and he motioned over to the next statue on this one's right Attis." "I'm sure you'll learn of them in your studies" He spoke to Shmuel.

"Finally, I am to be your third tutor. I do hope that is acceptable."
"I will be teaching you proper weapon and light armor management, and the importance of virtue, loyalty, courage, bravery, brotherhood, and sacrifice." The Knight spoke plainly and directly.
"I will also be teaching you the physical training a Knight must go through once you reach 10 years as well, we will begin training with heavier armors at that time.
I am to assist in teaching you how to hunt and ride a horse as well, alongside the masters of those crafts."

"Have you any questions for me? If not I would bid you farewell."

Prince Shmuel still had a poor grasp of the Greek language, but he had enough to grasp to follow a what each tutor would show him. Rav Immanuel, being already fluent in Greek, handled the majority of the discussions with each.

“If you have trouble with the Hebrew language, fear not,” he said to Lazarus the Elder. “I will ensure that he remains well versed in the tongue of his people. Still, I find it curious that you would teach him the language of the Anglo-Saxons. I had not thought that they had accepted your faith in those lands. Indeed, I had heard that their leader had sought to expel the Christians. Is it not so? And if it is, then why would you learn their tongue? Would it not be more helpful to learn the Egyptian dialect of Arabic, given His Majesty’s recent adventures in Eretz Mitzrayim1?

Later, while the young prince played with some of the instruments, Rav Immanuel quietly spoke with Lady Eleni.

“I must confess, milady, I had thought that in Christian courts, they believed artists to be rather baudy and free of morals. How did you come to be a teacher of both morality and music? Surely the notables of the realm would find you to be a poor model of the one from being a close student of the latter.

“Tell me, Sir Cisseus. Do you have much time to spare at this moment? I would be interested in ensuring your quality as a tutor of such physical pursuits before I entrust my king’s son to your care as his teacher, if you are amenable. Would you be willing to join me in the training salle?”

Lazarus
It is the language of trade, no? It matters not their faith, English has been spread by the merchants and pilgrims of old and continues to be spread this way.
As for Arabic, I would be glad to teach the boy the Egyptian dialect, if you wish it.
I was merely instructed to teach the Prince the three most common tounges in Cybelos. Greek, the language of the people, English, the language that connects us of different backgrounds, and Latin, the language of the court.

Eleni
"Is the nature of a bard to be cunning, yes?" Says Eleni, whilst giving a light laugh, she then continues,
No,  I must admit, I have only recently become a teacher of the musical arts, I will not claim to be of the level of the true masters or the tutors of the court. I am, how to put this? An assistant?
Yes, I believe that would be the word. I assist some of the musical tutors here, it is a passion of mine, the extra pay does not hurt either.
I have been spending my free hours down here in what would be otherwise used as a storage space, I am not surprised this is the place our friend, she gestures towards Cisseus, who is currently trying his hand at the dulcimer, well at least I think he's trying... would search for me.

I am only a tutor of morality, though. I am deeply sorry for the confusion. I would be honored to introduce you to the tutors who specialise in the arts, if you'd have it.
My personal teacher is Markos, he teaches new initiates in the Bards Guild, as I didn't wish to busy the royal tutors, though I suppose you'd want something a little more private for the Prince?
Again, I'm willing to introduce you to the tutors, or if you wish, I could share my knowledge of the arts.

Cisseus
Of course, rabbi.
I will have you know that I have trained my whole life to become a Knight.
As you can see, I am dressed for fighting in a more taxing environment.
So, I hope you will excuse me as I return to my quarters to change into my leathers. I will meet you in the sparring arena in one half hours time.
Cisseus bowed his head to the rabbi and gave the prince the same ceremonious bow as before. "Your Highness"

The Little Jewish Prince Empty Re: The Little Jewish Prince

Post by House of Judah Sun Jan 31, 2016 4:00 am

When he eventually arrived at the salle, Sir Cisseus found Rav Immanuel awaiting him.  The rabbi had already doffed his silks and stood with a training sword in hand.  It’s twin stood embedded in the dirt floor of the salle.  The young prince sat on one of the viewing stands around salle, surrounded by his three Cybelosian guards.  Immanuel raised his hand to the sword sticking up from the ground, an invitation or a challenge.

Sir Cisseus lifted the sword and tested its weight, its balance, its flow through the air.  The guards smiled.  Sir Cisseus was a seasoned warrior, still in his prime, while the rabbi had assuredly seen a number of seasons since his.  If the old man wanted to test Sir Cisseus, then let him.  It would be a short test.  Shmuel was simply confused.  He didn’t understand what was happening.

“Remember, this is for me to ensure you will be a proper tutor for young Shmuel.  Don’t hold back just because I have a little gray around the edges.”  He lifted his sword into a low guard and awaited Sir Cisseus.

“As you would have it, rabbi.”  The Greek knight raised his own sword and paused a moment before moving.  Speed and strength delivered his sword into a quick downward chop.  The rabbi’s sword just as quickly moved to meet its twin.  With a loud clang the two swords connected.  The guards looked on in shock.  Sir Cisseus had certainly delivered a mighty blow, but Rav Immanuel’s sword had not moved more than a quarter inch.

“Strong,” said Rav Immanuel.  “It is good that a knight be strong.  But he must also have finesse.  Show me yours.”  A flurry of blows began.  Attack, attack, defend, attack, defend, defend, defend, attack.  Faster and faster.  Soon the guards could not rightly swear that they saw swords and not mere tricks of light.  Sweat began to gleam on both men’s foreheads.  The guards were dumbfounded that the old man could keep up with Sir Cisseus, but the knight knew it was more than that.  To an observer it would seem the two were well matched, but he could feel it.  He was pushing the rabbi true, but it was Rav Immanuel that was controlling this combat.

The swords crossed again, but this time Rav Immanuel pushed in.  Hilt was pinned against hilt and both pressed into their bearers chests.

“Tell me, Sir Cisseus,” Rav Immanuel said in a whisper that only the two of them could hear.  “Do you love your king?”

The Little Jewish Prince Empty Re: The Little Jewish Prince

Post by Cybelos [ERE] Sun Jan 31, 2016 5:20 am

"Αγαπώ βασιλιά μου" 1 Cisseus said, taking what the rabbi said as a mock to what he is, all the work he had accomplished in his life.

The rabbi was a talented fighter, no doubt looks had deceived him, he would need to calm himself, he was better than this, it was foolish to use such a heavy attack immediately. He would have to relax, rethink and have his sparring partner put himself in a situation that Cisseus could exploit.

Cisseus pushed into the rabbi's chest and pushed himself backwards. Once both of the men regained themselves Cisseus put himself into a position that welcomed an attack, purposefully leaving his left side exposed. Immanuel saw his opportunity and took it, launching a strike at Cisseus' left, which the Knight, waiting, sidestepped the rabbi and went for an attack on Immanuel's exposed back. Bringing the sword down upon him, this was it, the turning point, or so he had thought. Immanuel's sword raised from behind his back blocking the heavy strike, weakened, but still enough to deflect the shot and allowing the rabbi to regain his footing. "εντυπωσιακός" 2

The two stood at opposite ends of the grounds, it was obvious to Cisseus that Rav Immanuel wasn't tiring. Must be some sort of monk-like training to control his heart rate. He would have to barrage the rabbi, overwhelm his training, make him weak of will and, perhaps, use his environment to his advantage. If he could get the rabbi where he was planning to the sun would partially blind him, leaving him vulnerable.

That must be the key, he thought
"I haven't been pushed like this since I was a younger man, perhaps I'm growing too soft?"
Cisseus said trying to lure the rabbi to step to him.

1: I Love my King
2: Impressive

Rav Immanuel smiled as he circled Sir Cisseus.  He held up his sword, putting himself in a modified window guard.  His eyes narrowed slightly as he moved to face the sun.  His smile deepened.  Then he slightly twisted his sword.  The light Sir Cisseus had hoped to use against the rabbi was suddenly reflected into his own eyes.  It stunned the knight, only momentarily, but a moment was enough.  Rav Immanuel moved quickly, and Sir Cisseus barely had time to raise his own sword to block before he was across the salle.  The first attack knocked him off balance and the rabbi’s follow up attacks left him no opportunity to regain it.  They came in rapid succession and all Sir Cisseus could do was give ground as he parried.

And then he lost his footing.  He fell back.  Rav Immanuel swung again, knocking Sir Cisseus’s sword from his hand.  He swung his sword in loop, bringing it down on the knight.  Sir Cisseus rolled out of the way, grabbed his sword and brought himself back to his feet.  He pushed off again and began a flurry of blows against the rabbi.  Rav Immanuel’s sword danced before him, each attack fended off until finally one parry went just a little too far.  Sir Cisseus swung his sword around quickly and the dull blade slapped Rav Immanuel’s leather.

“Point to you, Sir Cisseus,” the rabbi said, the same smile upon his face.  Both men were drawing heavy breaths, but even now the rabbi’s seemed somehow more controlled, less ragged.  They stepped back from each other and Rav Immanuel nodded.  “Strength, speed, finesse, tactics, improvisation.  Splendid.  You’ll be a more than suitable teacher for the boy.”  He looked at the angle of the sun, then turned to the young prince.  “Your Highness, it almost time for lunch.  The guards will take you to Talya’s kitchen.  Let her fill your belly until she has satisfied herself.  I will join you once I have recovered myself from my exertions.”

“Yes, Ravi.”  Shmuel rose and the guards took up positions around him.  Rav Immanuel replaced his sword on the rack of training weapons as the four left, then grabbed up a pair of cloths.  He tossed one to Sir Cisseus and used the other to begin wiping the sweat from his brow.

“You love your king.  It is good that a man loves his king.  It speaks to the character of the man, and of the king.  I too love my king, and his sons.  It should be of no surprise to you that my sole concern here is that boy.  I would see this whole of this kingdom burn before I saw him hurt.  I am sure you are much the same about your King.  No doubt you love your king enough to die for him.  I wonder, though, if you love him well enough to die for his bastard son.

“Take no offense to the word.  It means little enough to my own people, for assuredly a bastard will inherit in the same manner as his legitimate brothers.  But in Christendom it is different.  A bastard, even a legitimized one, is not the prefered heir for many.  And there are those who will hate him for it.  Can you say truthfully there is not one lord within your kingdom whose father had produced an elder bastard?  I think not.  And by his elevation, Prince Theon will weaken their claims.  Guard him.  Guard him as I guard Prince Shmuel.  And perhaps he too will be a king worthy of your love.”

The day had finally come when His Majesty Alexander I of Caernwell, King of Cybelos and the Aegean returned to Tyrn.  The city was in a celebratory mood, for not only had their king returned, but he had brought with him an heir to his kingdom.  The succession would be secure.  Many came to Alexander’s court to give their well wishes.  Finally, the herald announced the two Judeans as they strode forward.

“His Royal Highness, Shmuel ben Yitzchak ben Yehudah, Prince of Judea, and his tutor Rav Immanuel ben Elior.”  The two made their way before the throne, and each bowed to the king.

“Thank you for granting us the hospitality of your home,” the young prince said in somewhat stilted Greek.  He looked quickly to his teacher who nodded reassuringly to the boy and a smile grew on Shmuel’s face.  Rav Immanuel returned his attention to the king.

“Your Majesty, my liege, Yitzchak ben Benyamin ben Yehudah, the first of his name, the Lion of Judah, as decreed by the Almighty, King of Judeans, Lord of Jerusalem and all Israel, Defender of the Temple, gives thanks that you have granted his youngest son the hospitality of your home and celebrates that you have been joined by your own beloved son.  He sends you these gifts, as tokens of his very great affection for you and your house.

Eighteen jars of oil, that your food will hold flavor.
Eighteen head of cattle, that you will never know hunger.
Eighteen jars of honey, that you will know sweetness.
Eighteen pounds of salt, that you will preserve.

Eighteen hounds, that you may find your quarry.
Eighteen falcons, that you may hunt in the sky as you do on the land.

Eighteen maps, that you may never lose your way.
Eighteen charts of the stars, that you may know the heavens.
Eighteen chests of silver, that your coffers will never empty.
Eighteen rolls of silk, that you will know comfort.
Eighteen pots of dye, that your vision will not be bleak.
Eighteen jeweled adornments, that you may surround yourself with beauty.
Eighteen tapestries, that you may keep your murals when you leave your home.
Eighteen swords of Damascus steel, that you may defend your realm.
Eighteen relics of the Christian faith, that your piety will never be questioned.
Eighteen works of scholars, that you may continue to enhance your wisdom.

“By these eighteen gifts of eighteen, my king demonstrates his fond wish for you to be full of life, for eighteen is the number of life1.  Please accept these gifts of my king that all may know of the peace and love between our kingdoms."

1The characters of the Hebrew word "chai", meaning life, when assigned their corresponding Hebrew numeral values total to eighteen, making eighteen a very lucky number within Jewish culture.  As a result of this, gifts in multiples of eighteen are very common among Jews as it is considered to be giving a gift of life.

Alexander eyed the two Judeans, the prince was dependant upon his tutor. This was not yet home. More than fair, but it upset him just a little.
He would have to relax here, try to make the Prince somewhat comfortable.

"It would be a honor to accept such fine gifts. I thank you and your King for this kindness. I will see to it that these gifts are paid with gifts of our own in return."

"So, I must ask, Immanuel,  how was your time at Duke Isaac's estate? Heard he made a bit of an Alexander looked down towards the Prince briefly -a fool of himself.
Boar? You'll have to forgive him, he means well. Truly."

"I've also heard you've met with Sir Cisseus. I told him to keep it a secret that he was the tutor as long as he could. A little surprise.
"If you will it, Your Highness." said Alexander giving his best impression of the man, full pout.
Talented man, but I heard you gave him quite the showing.
He's been at the library as of late researching about monks of the far east, I'm not sure what that spar must have worked into his head."

Finally Alexander turned to Shmuel. "Your Greek is very good, that Lazarus keeps things lively despite his age. I hope he doesn't ramble on too much on the origins of the words, I know he'd love to."

"So, I'm interested Your Highness, -do you enjoy being called Your Highness?" Alexander continued "What do you think of what you've seen of this country so far? Is everyone treating you as your station would command?"

OOC: I'm figuring Immanuel and Alexander are somewhat familiar, as some previous posts would suggest.

“The boar was forgiven instantly and forgotten by meals end, Your Majesty,” Rav Immanuel reassured King Alexander.  “And your knight, Sir Cisseus.  A good man.  A testament to his liege.  And skilled with a blade.  He has firm mastery of most of the building blocks, though he could still use some practice at weaving them all together.  It is a pleasure to be in your company again, Your Majesty.  I think you remain my favorite Christian pilgrim to be given the hospitality of Yitzhak’s court.  I hope you will be able to make time to discuss philosophy some evenings as you did then with my king.”

Prince Shmuel looked to his tutor, somewhat uncertain, when the king spoke to him.  Rav Immanuel nodded reassuringly.

“I have found your city to be very beautiful,” the young prince said.  “I particularly enjoyed visiting your…” he became unsure of himself again and turned to his tutor.  “Eych omrim be’yevanitt gan?1 he said to Rav Immanuel at barely above a whisper.  Rav Immanuel whispered back his answer, and Shmuel nodded quickly.  “Visiting your garden,” he finished his sentence.

“We had a chance to visit it two day ago, Your Majesty.  A wonderful collection of specimens.  His highness greatly enjoyed it.  He even had a chance to play with some of the children here at court.”

1Eych omrim be’yevanitt gan? - How do you say garden in Greek? (lit. How to say in Greek garden?)

"I thank you, Your Highness, I've had the pleasure of visiting your homeland on multiple occasions and I know the beauty of the place. So, I very much appreciate your kind words."

"Now Alexander motioned to one of his guards who promptly gave a small salute and left the throne room to return a few moments later, servants in tow. The servants carrying two ornate boxes. I am having a feast in a the coming days to celebrate our Kingdom's prosperity and my son, Theon's arrival. Alexander eyed the servants and nodded, the servants placed the two boxes before the Judeans, knelt and opened them. One robe lay in each made especially for the guests. Dark blue with gold inlay, two heraldic golden lions on either breast, one small, blue velvet hat lay inside the box intended for the prince. I do hope they are to your likings, I would have you wear them to the feast in a few days time. The servants will have these boxes placed in your quarters and have them layed out when the time comes. Your personal servants will tell you of the seating and when to arrive." Alexander again gives a small motion and the servants are off.  "They should fit just fine, it is the fashion to wear looser fitting robes, but not so loose that they seem poorly made. Let your servants know if they need to be taken in, the tailors here would be able to mend them in any way you see fit in a short time."

The group continued for a short time before saying their farewells.

Making an entrance to the great hall you would be greeted by the warming sounds of two harps playing in unison, one of either side of the center of  the three main tables on the elevated area of the hall. A great window lay behind each center seat of the tables. Alexander was seated in the center of the middle table, Theon on his left, Duke Isaac and Duchess Alexandra on his right. At the leftmost table sat the Dukes and Duchesses from Corinthia, Epirus, Pyrgos, and Oetylos. At the rightmost table sat the Duchy rulers from Taygetos, Aetolia, and Thessaly. There were two open seats for the Judean guests next to Duke Elias of Thessaly. The other Duchies were unrepresented as they could not make the trip. All Dukes and Duchesses wore white robes with a green trident in the center. Alexander wore a white cloak which descended down to his instep over his white robes with green and gold accents. The robes were fastened from the waist with the hangings carefully hidden out of sight. Prince Theon wore a white robe with green accents layed in the form of a labyrinth on his chest, one emerald encrustated on either wrist.
Many bards, jugglers, and other entertainers made their way to the area in the center of the three tables, entertaining the guests.

"Ladies and Lords of the court the hall grew silent, not even the happily drunk sipped their drinks we are gathered here to celebrate the unification of our Kingdom and the security of the succession of your King. From this day on, to celebrate the occasion me and my son's house shall be called House Copais." The crowds of people erupted into cheering and clapping, drinks raised, the King followed with the same motion. "And from this day forward- Alexander continued boomingly -to commemorate this glorious day, the city of Tyrn shall retake her ancient name of Athens and the Duchy of Tyrna shall take the name Attica." the crowds erupted once more trying to match their kings volume. "Enjoy the food, drink, and festivities. God has blessed our Kingdom and its people with wealth and power unparalleled. May he forever bless us, friends!"

OOC: You're welcome to interact with any of the Dukes/Duchesses, Alexander or Theon if you wish. Or continue after the events!

Earlier, the day of the feast...

“You will ensure that as His Majesty’s cooks prepare the meal, they use only the kosher meats you have brought from the market,” Rav Immanuel said to Talya.

“I do know my duties, Ravi,” the nurse responded.  “You don’t need to lecture me.  And don’t think you’ve fooled me with your supposed piety.  You care more about preventing the introduction of poison than terefah1.”

“I have every confidence that King Alexander means us no harm.”

“Don’t try your lies and misdirections on me, Ravi. You may trust in the king but do not yet in his court. Lie to me again and I will pull you across my knee if I must.”

“I am twenty years your senior.”

“Bah.  That may be an accurate accounting of your years, but you don’t wear them as a normal man would.  I’m sure I don’t know what you experienced during your travels, but you must have found something to stay off the decay of years.”  Rav Immanuel started to respond, but was immediately shushed.  “As I said, none of your lies or misdirections.  I will ensure the prince doesn’t eat anything forbidden him, either by God or his own body.

At the feast…

“How good and pleasant it is for people to sit together in unity,” said Rav Immanuel.  “To quote the Psalms.”  He raised his goblet high and smiled at the assembled nobles.  “To our host and his son.  May God grant them both long and healthy lives.”  His eyes swept across the faces around him, noting who was pleased by his toast and, more importantly, who was not.  As the meal progressed, he turned to Duke Elias.

“Your Grace, it is a pleasure to meet you.  I must confess that during my own travels I never found myself in Thessaly.  Please, if you will indulge me, is it a comely land?

1 terefah - torn, used to refer to animals forbidden for eating due to specific kinds of injuries or the injuries themselves, root of the yiddish word “traif”

Elias watched the rabbi with suspicion, raising his drink only when his prince did so. Still tense and distrustful.

Likewise, Rabbi.

The beauty of Thessaly is unmatched. Great valleys and towering mountains that grow thick with greenery.
If you were planning a visit I would wait until this ugh.. Bogomil Elias said the word with disgust mess is cleared up. Rome won't do anything of it, even with those heretics practically gathering on the steps of Saint Peter's Basilica. I don't know your peoples view of the Roman church, and why would a Jewish king seek their approval? Elias took a deep sip of his wine -but they won't find much love here. They are greedy and power hungry. Should one bishop lord over every other? Elias continued on his tangent, taking another sip of his wine.

Cassandra, Duchess of Thessaly signalled to a servant, asking for water and bread.
She rested her hand of Elias' arm "Take these, dear." Elias knew better than to challenge her, resigning to his bread.

She looked to Immanuel "Forgive my oaf of a husband, rabbi, this Bogomil problem has been quite taxing as you well know. You may wish to speak to Chief Rabbi Solomon of the Romaniotes here in the capital. I believe he has a son, Lalos, they may have insights for you. I don't know if their beliefs contradict yours but It might be good for the prince to be amongst those of his faith.
In any case I'm sure they'll be warmer than some you'll meet. Cassandra patted Elias' arm lightly

The festivities continued for some time leaving time for the Dukes and Duchesses to talk with each other, learning the goings-on in their respective dukedoms.

“This Bogomil’s followers are quite the disruption, aren’t they?  Riots and rebellions.  It’s all very messy.  Still, one wonders how the sect spread so quickly.  It is said that priests of the Greek Church, which I believe has been dominant in the region, had been particularly corrupt in their dealings with the locals.  Perhaps they were unhappy with the stewards of their souls.”  Rav Immanuel took in some food before continuing.

“I admit my king is not particularly concerned with currying favor with Rome like the princes of Europe, at least not to the same extent.  He does hope to maintain friendly relations with Rome, for such friendships are rewarding in their own right.  After all, was Rome not the center of culture for a thousand years?  Does it not remain central for many even today?”  Rav Immanuel took another sip of wine.

“You know, I have meant to speak to the Jewish community here in Athens.  I think tomorrow I will go speak to Rav Solomon.  It will be good to find a minyan with which to pray and study Torah.  I don’t suppose you know if Rav Solomon is a Karaite, do you?”

I.. I am not so sure, rabbi. The Romaniotes would have arrived in these lands after the destruction of the Second Temple and have lived here peacefully ever since. I believe they spread their beliefs through oral tradition. I'm sorry to say I don't know very much about the Jewish people.

What I do know is that they speak Yevanic, which is, if you are unfamiliar, a mix between the Greek and Hebrew languages.

I'm sure copies of their texts could be made available if you requested them.
I would be fairly confident that you could find copies inside the Tyr- -forgive me, that it to say the Athens Library.
The Mahzor Romania I believe it is called, though that may just be used on festivities as that is the only times I have come into contact with it, as we have a population of these Romaniotes throughout the kingdom, even in Thessaly.

I am sorry to inform you that even they have been victims of these Bogomils with a few of their temples destroyed in the dukedom and the lands to the north.
I must say they have been very resilient and even willing to speak with these Bogomils, perhaps we could learn from them...
the Duchess trailed off absentmindedly moving her drink in a circular motion

-Right, as I way saying Yevanic is a combination of the two languages, but it is spoken much like Greek and written similarly to Hebrew.
So, as long as you are familiar with speaking Greek you should be able to manage.

“Well, my lady, it seems to me we have been conversing in Greek during so far this evening.  I believe I have acquitted myself quite well in the usage of the tongue so far.  In truth, I have spoken Yevanic before, as well as a number of other dialects of the diaspora.  I have done some travelling in my time and I have found that the lost tribes have been spread to every corner of the known world, from Marrakech to the Far Orient, and where they go the Jew has adapted the local cultures and customs into their traditions.  I have even learned of a Judeo-Goidelic language spoken in Hibernia1, though I have not had occasion to hear or speak it.

“It disturbs, though I suppose does not surprise, that Romaniote synagogues have also come under attack by the Bogomilists.  Still, it is the way of our people to engage and debate rather than hewer those who believe differently to us, for by such dialogue may our peace be maintained.

“You seem a woman of very metropolitan views, much as others I have met so far, which does well to put my mind at ease.  Still, I remain certain that it is likely there are those who are more conservative and orthodox in their ways.  It would certainly aid me to know who would hold such views prior to my encountering them, less a more awkward discussion is predicated.”

Yes, you do speak the language very well, a slight accent, but hardly noticeable. You mentioned the Orient? Have you ever been?
Our trade through the Red Sea brings us in contact with the east in form of the Cholas, Ghurids, Karakhanids, even the Songs. But I have never been, I do wonder of the beauty of the place.

I would say that nearly every politician in this country that would be against having you here would put on a facade, especially if they wanted something from you.
I would avoid the Islands, they're much more... open with their feelings. However, I would expect you'd spend most of your time in the capital, so any political figures here would be vetted a bit as to not offend, I can not speak for the citizens of Cybelos, but you, or rather the prince has a detachment of soldiers at his side, so I wouldn't be expecting trouble from any of our citizens, not that they would without the soldiers.

OOC: I've been pretty weak with my past few replies (busy!), I'll try to really get into Solomon/Lalos
