Raiding lead to Conquest

Farmers.
Farmers are the backbone of civilization, without them life would be very different. Ragnar knows this, and he knows that the soil of his homeland is poor, and only good for a very limited amounts of crops. That is why alongside with the recent raid parties, an army is sent to England. An army led by Ragnar's son Ormr.

Weeks later Ormr and his fleet of twenty ships sail into the river Thames. The sail down river and begin to sack the settlements near the river. After "collecting" their supplies from local towns and villages they set up camp. After receiving news about the Rorukheimian army and believing God would grant them victory, the local lord decides to raise his army and march out to meet them in battle. The Rorukheimian scouts notice the army approaching them and report back to Ormr. Ormr and his commanders discuss their battle plan and rally their forces. The next day the armies meet in battle. Ormr's army forms into battle lines, as well does the Saxon Lord. The Saxons army mainly just contains man-at-arms and a few archers, basically mostly peasants with minimal training. The cowardly lord himself sits on a horse in the back of the army with his priest. The Rorukheimian forces are formed with two hundred archers in loose formation in the front, with eight hundred hirdmen behind them. The third line contains four hundred spearmen and the fourth line holds the two hundred berserkers with the unit of Hestherre off to the left of them. The battlefield is mostly flat with woods to Rorukheims left, Saxons right. At the sound of a horn, the battle commences. Rorukheimian archers and Saxon archers nock their arrows. With the shouting of their commanders the archers release their arrows. Rorukheims troops enter shield wall to protect themselves. The skirmish continues on for another ten minutes before the Saxon Lord grows impatient and orders his men to charge. Archers and man-at-arms run towards the Rorukheimian army. The Rorukheimian archers rush back into the safety of the backlines, while the hirdmen hold their shield wall; bracing themselves for the impact. The Saxons practically throw themselves at the wall, pounding their weapons uselessly against it. As more Saxons fall to Rorukheimian axes and swords, a force of one hundred Raider Cavalry, led by Ormr, rides out of the woods. Using their bows they fire into the backs of the Saxons. With the Saxon's right flank under heavy fire, the Hestherre ride out from the side and do hammer and anvil strikes on the Saxon's right flank. Soon the Saxons fled, trying to run from the onslaught. With his army crushed, the Saxon lord attempts to flee, only to be shot down by Ormr's arrows. Rorukheim has won the battle. Soldiers receive proper burial, and the Saxon lord's head is taken and displayed as a warning. With no army left to oppose them and no lord ruling, the Rorukheimians storm the lords keep, and sack the surrounding towns and villages. They take the keep and hold it as their new forward base. Churches and monasteries are looted and burned. Settlers from Rorukheim hear of Ormr's victory and begin to sail over. But this is only a start, as Ormr and his wolves set their eyes on a large city down the river that will soon be the new seat of power for Rorukheim in England. This is the start of Danelaw England.

Jorvik and Danelaw Conquest Empty The city of Lunden

Major trade City under Siege!

The brave warriors of Rorukheim climbing up the walls of Lunden

After the fall of Kent, the three thousand strong army, led by Ormr, continues on with their plans of conquest. Sailing down river from their newly acquired fort in Kent, only leaving fifty guards to hold it. They sail with no trouble, or any attack on the fleet. While sailing, Ormr notices the rustling in the bushes. Then the hurried ducking of men's heads has they try to remain out of sight. Too late for them as Ormr grabs his bow and shoots an arrow into the brush. A man screams as the arrow hits his abdomen. The rest of the scouts flee in terror that they might by next, leaving their companion behind to die. The norsemen continue to sail as the screams of the dying man fill the air around them.
They make camp one kilometer from the grand city. One problem loomed over the camp, as they wonder how to get through the walls or over them. That's when Ormr gets an idea. They begin construction as soon as the idea leaves his lips. Bidding their time and cutting off trade from the city.
After a few days of construction and the painfully slow process of starving the city, Rorukheim is ready to launch it's attack. Although the city has enough supplies to hold out for a few weeks, they're starting to feel the forced starvation. As the dawn begins to break, painting the sky in beautiful colors. The tired guards patrol their posts, drowsy by lack of sleep but still alert out of fear of the "damn norseman attacking at any moment". Then, a young guard sees something approaching down river. He squints towards it, but the rising sun and the cover of trees make it difficult to tell what exactly it is. Then as his vision clears, he sees the tops of siege towers. Panicked, he begins to shout, "WE'RE UNDER ATTACK! SOUND THE ALARM!"
One of the guard towers hearing the man's cry, begins to ring a bell. Throughout the city bells begin to ring, as soldiers grab their weapons and try to maintain order amongst the panic crowds. As soldiers begin to rush to the south side of the city to defend the wall against ships, they only leave one hundred-fifty soldiers to watch over the north side. Arrow barrels are filled, and soldiers form lines as the ships begin to attack the harbor. The norse raise their shields over their heads as the first volley is fired. The battle has begun.
Arrows fly through the air like flocks of birds, striking down unprotected heathens and littering the ground, and towers. The first of the towers reach the walls. The defending soldiers prepare to engage, as archers retreat to different locations to fire and pick off the heathens. Like true warriors, the Rorukheimian soldiers climb up the siege towers and engage the defenders. Although they outnumber the defenders, it will still be an uphill battle for the men and women of Rorukheim. As the battle rages on and more towers land, the defenders don't take notice of one key fact. Why is there only fifteen ships? In the north a force of fifteen thousand soldiers charge towards the city from the north. They push up ladders and a battering ram. The guards, completely off guard, and in the process diverting more troops to the south gate, rush into positions to defend. But it's too little too late as the first warriors have already climbed the ladders and are onto the walls. While the defenders try to repel the attack, the battering ram begins to break open the gate. With no way to stop it, the ram breaks down the gate allowing the Viking horde into the city. In the southern half, Rorukheimian warriors are unable to break through the defenders lines. The defenders continue to hold their lines, until they find axes in their backs. Confused, the find out that a whole army has magically appeared behind their lines. With both sides under attack, the defenders fall and their lines crumble. They're either slaughtered or spared as slaves. Lunden, the wealthy trade city is now under the control of Rorukheim's Danelaw. With this leverage, and through negotiation, the Saxson lord south of Lunden becomes the puppet of Rorukheim and swears loyalty to its monarch and banner.

Saxon's resist Rorukheimian rule!
Jorvik and Danelaw Conquest 8A62U
The three Kings charging into the Rorukheimian shield wall

As Rorukheim drifts away from it territory from Kent, the two Saxon lord decide to block off the river, cutting off Rorukheim's way to the sea. With Rorukheim's escape rout blocked, the two lords and their friend south of Lunden, march their armies to free Luden from it's pagan lords. The three armies meet three miles away from Lunden. Rorukheim scouts report back to Ormr what is going on, and Ormr and his army marches out to meet them. Two miles away from Lunden they meet. The Saxon's hold the hill, look down at the pagans. The Pagans wait in a field surrounded by a forest. Each army forms their lines and prepare for battle.
Of the three Saxon lords there, only one was decent at military tactics. Two of the armies march down, towards the Rorukheimian shield wall, while the third holds the hill as a reserve force. Soon the Saxons clash against the strangely small Rorukheimian army. With more men, the Saxon's begin to push the shield wall back. Unified, the Rorukheimian warriors slowly take steps back, having the appearance that the Saxon's were winning. Watching the fight from the hill, the last king, hungry for glory and believing that they were winning, charges his army down. The only smart king tries to yell at him to go back, but too little to late as his army joins that cramped glob of men. Then the trap is sprung as troops from the forest around them encircle the Saxons and form a shield wall, Completely surrounded and with no reserved forces, the Saxons are butchered, as it's too cramped for them to swing their swords or raise their shields. Again the Saxons fall pray to Ormr's tactics. With three armies destroyed and three unguarded lands, Ormr presses his army forward and claims these lands, connecting the Danelaw regions.

Jorvik and Danelaw Conquest Empty The City of Lunden, Danelaw

Post by Rorukheim Tue Jan 30, 2018 6:12 am

Defenses Built, Swords Sharpen, A Storm Approaches: The story so far-
Three years ago, northern raids in England started up again. Many lords assumed like before the norseman would raid the poor and some monasteries and leave again. Then a army of two thousand norseman landed on the beaches of Kent. The lord of Kent was foolish, thinking he could take them on head to head. That his god will lead them to victory. He learned the hard way that his god was not coming to help him as the pagans dragged his soul to Helheim. Only weeks after the heathen army captured on the greatest cities in England. The city of Lunden. It's access to the sea from the river Thames had grown it into a wealthy trade city. A roman fortress stood in the center of town. A reminder of the old days of a once great empire under God. How low it has fallen. Now pagans rule it by a majority. The churches replaced with temples to the gods, the once devoted Christians, now worshiping Odin. And a massive army lies there, and waits. Waits for the Saxons to approach, so it may strike. Alas they never came. For two longs years the norse rebuilt their numbers and waited under an uneasy peace. Then a sea battle raged in the heart of Rorukheim between a mighty Christian order, and the brave warriors of Rorukheim. After a grand victory, Rorukheim uncovered a plot against them in England. A Saxon kingdom named Dunmonia has been in secret massing an army, with the help of the other peoples of the island. Fearing that their Saxon territories will be taken Ragnar sends an army of four-thousand along with his eldest son, Rogovan, to defend their territories. Rogovan arrived shortly after the execution of the Grandmaster and the Bishop of Lunden a year later. He and his brother Ormr prepare Lunden's defenses. Wooden spikes placed on the base of the city's walls, trenches as tall as a man filled with sticky mud only five meters away from the wall. Pots of boiling oil ready by each gate, more in the fall back area of the walled Roman fortress. The port gate is secured and the norsemen wait and wait and wait and wait...
