As the College of Cardinals has discussed this topic recently, it has come to the attention of His Holiness the Pope that there should be a shared stance of the Church on the matter of ransom.

His holiness the Pope shall separate 3 cases of ransom: members of the priesthood, nobility and common people.

Let the discussion begin!

Very good, firstly, where would a soldier or a knight be placed in these categories?
The common people, I would surmise.

A knight, if he is from a noble family, is part of the nobility. If he is a soldier recruited from common folk, from low-births, then he is a commoner.
